About the Project

:!: The OMII-EU project ended on april 2008. These pages remain to document the work which has been done, and the results achieved.

The Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute for Europe (OMII-Europe) has been established to provide key software components for building e-Infrastructures within the European Research Area (ERA).

The initial focus for OMII-Europe is to facilitate the development and porting of a common set of application level services to a number of major Grid software distributions, and further to develop tighter interoperability between different Grid distributions. This will provide greater application level portability and will thus greatly simplify the use of Grids, especially when those Grids are built on heterogeneous infrastructures.

Many of the major Grid software providers such as EGEE, UNICORE, Globus and CROWNgrid are working with OMII-Europe to achieve these goals. OMII-Europe project partners are committed to the standards process and to working with standards organisations to develop and deliver common, open-source, standards-compliant services.

About the Job Submission Task

OMII-Europe will address the extension of the existing job submission systems within GLOBUS, UNICORE and EGEE to meet the new, emerging grid standards. In addition to implementing the core functionality, specific extensions necessary for projects such as EGEE will also be defined and fed back to the standardisation process. Implementations in EGEE will involve the use of the CREAM-based computing element.
